Identification of "Ryan Virus" as an amoeba of the genus Hartmannella.

چکیده
A recent paper (Pereira, et al., 1966) reported the isolation in Britain of several strains of an antibiotic-resistant infective agent that caused unusual cytopathic effects when inoculated into cell cultures. The new agent was evidently recoverable from the respiratory tract in certain patients, mostly young children, with illnesses of varying severity but with fever and respiratory symptoms as common features. Primary isolations

MMICAJmJOURNAL Summary Evidence is presented that a cytopathic agent isolated from human nose, throat, and bronchial swabs, and termed " Ryan virus" is in fact an amoeba of the genus Hartmannella. Detection of a protozoal cell-type by electron microscopy led to the recognition of typical trophozoites and cysts of this free-living soil amoeba in inoculated tissue cultures. Details are given of c...
متن کاملNew data on the cyst structure of Hartmannella vermiformis Page, 1967 (Lobosea, Gymnamoebia)
Isolates of widely distributed amoeba species Hartmannella vermiformis differs in the details of cyst structure. This is unusual for gymnamoebae and is important in course of modern approaches to amoebae systematic. Cysts of the isolate of this species, described here, have regular separation of the cyst wall into endocyst and ectocyst, in contrast with the “original” isolates, described by F.C...
متن کاملContamination of virological tissue cultures with a species of free-living soil amoeba.
Overwhelming contamination of a continuous cell line with a free-living soil amoeba of the genus Hartmannella is reported. The significance of the finding is discussed because of recent interest shown in the role of this and related species of amoebae in disease of humans. The methods used to detect and identify the amoeba are described and some examples of the amoebae are shown by photomicrogr...
متن کاملNeochlamydia hartmannellae gen. nov., sp. nov. (Parachlamydiaceae), an endoparasite of the amoeba Hartmannella vermiformis.
Free-living amoebae are increasingly being recognized to serve as vehicles of dispersal for various bacterial human pathogens and as hosts for a variety of obligate bacterial endocytobionts. Several Chlamydia-like Acanthamoeba endocytobionts constituting the recently proposed family Parachlamydiaceae are of special interest as potential human pathogens. In this study coccoid bacterial endocytob...
متن کاملHartmannella Culbertsoni as Revealed in Scanning Electron Microscopy
An axenic culture of Hartmannella culbertsoni obtained from the American Type Culture Collection was used in this study. Amoebas maintained in a trypticase soy broth medium were concentrated, fixed and dehydrated before being transferred drop-wise to round microscope cover classes for critical point drying in liquid CO2. Dried specimens were coated with carbon and palladium-gold and studied wit...
